Dog and tail docking

Currently, many breeders and amateurs are in heated debate about whether it is advisable to stop the ears and tail in dogs of various breeds. On the one hand, such a procedure has been carried out for many decades, and so the standards of such breeds as Doberman, Poodle, Rottweiler, Great Dane, Giant Schnauzer and many others were formed. On the other hand, the procedure is rather painful and many animal advocates favor canceling the stopping of ears or tail in dogs.

Why and why

Stopping the tail and ears of dogs has been around for quite some time, it has become a tradition. It is known that tails were cut off for dogs in Ancient Rome, then it was generally believed that this could prevent rabies. Currently, such a procedure is not done for all breeds, but for those who need it. First of allThis is a way to prevent various injuries from hunting or dog fights, as well as during the performance of security and guard functions. Now, based on humane considerations for some breeds, it was decided to abandon this procedure and stopping the ears and tail in dogs is carried out only as a last resort, strictly for medical reasons. However, it is not only a humane attitude towards animals. Recent studies have shown that the tail, as part of the spine, is the most important tool for a dog to help control the direction of movement when cornering, that is, it is a kind of steering wheel. Moreover, stopping the tail in dogs can cause a number of problems with the musculoskeletal system, despite this, many breeders stop tails for their pets, paying tribute to tradition, observing the standards that have been around for centuries.

There are general rules. stopping tails in dogs. It is, according to general rules, cut off on the 3rd-10th day of the animal’s life. This is due to a very low pain threshold at this age and poor development of nerve endings. In addition, the healing process is much faster. General or local anesthesia is not used in this case. Anesthesia is used if the relief is carried out at a later age, and after 6 months it is not carried out at all, except for special cases prescribed by the veterinarian. There are also two main ways to remove the tail: this is clipping and squeezing, the latter is considered more humane, but this is also a moot point. The essence of squeezing is that the tightly bandaged part of the tail, devoid of blood supply, disappears after 5-7 days.

It is believed that the sooner the tail docking is carried out in dogs - the better, but still it is worth observing some rules. It is best to carry out such a procedure after the first vaccination. The animal must be healthy, treated from external and internal parasites, since their presence can cause complications in wound healing. At this age, surgery is performed under local anesthesia. Puppies are securely fixed and must block the oral cavity. To prevent the puppy from licking the damaged area, a special collar should be used, and the cut-off area should be tightly bandaged. This will prevent infection and speed up the healing process.

Ears are another part of a dog’s body that is stopped for the same reason. This is the prevention of injuries, following traditions and observing breed standards. A dog with short-cut ears is much less vulnerable to a fight with the enemy, during a fight with a wolf or a bear, this also sways fighting and service dogs. Therefore, for centuries, many breeds have their ears trimmed to a certain length and angle. At present, ear canopy in dogs is carried out mainly for aesthetic purposes in order to form a beautiful head shape according to breed standards. In many countries, stopping the ears of dogs is prohibited at the legislative level, in Russia such a procedure can still be carried out. This discrepancy has already negatively affected many of our breeders, as there were problems with admission to international exhibitions.

Ear trimming should only be done very experienced veterinarian. Many owners consider this procedure to be very easy and do not attach its due importance. This is fundamentally wrong, since improperly trimmed auricles can ruin your pet's appearance, and poor postoperative care can lead to a number of serious complications, such as blood loss, suppuration, thickening of sutures and inflammation. Eating of dogs ears is carried out at the age of 4 to 12 weeks. This is due to the age of the puppy and its breed, the smaller the dog - the later they perform this procedure. Too early to trim can not be due to the fact that the proportions of the head and ears are still weakly formed and it will be difficult to determine their true shape. In addition, before stopping, it is necessary to conduct the first vaccination of the puppy.

Features of stopping the tail and ears in dogs of individual breeds

Nevertheless, there are a number of breeds that are difficult to imagine with a long tail or drooping ears, this appearance has evolved over the centuries and we do not imagine them in any other way. So, among boxers and Dobermans, the tail is cut off along the 2-3rd vertebra so that the anus is partially covered. In the Rottweiler, the tail stops on the 1-2nd vertebra. These are service and guard dogs, so their tails are cut so short. Airedale tails are removed 1/3 of the length. In poodles, which used to be hunting dogs, and now have become decorative, the tail is stopped at 1/2.

General rule for ear trimming - for breeds with a short muzzle, the ears are left shorter, if the muzzle is more elongated, the ears are left longer. For Giant Schnauzers and Dobermans, an acute shape was previously formed, but recently it has changed to a more square one. It is very important for the Doberman to properly fix the ears after trimming with adhesive tape and make sure that they develop and "stand" correctly. In the Central Asian Shepherd Dog and "Caucasians" ears are completely cut off for 3-7 days of life. Stopping the ears of dogs of these breeds is a very responsible procedure, as incorrect trimming can lead to hearing problems and spoil the appearance of the animal.

Advantages and disadvantages

In 1996, canine scientists and prominent veterinarians conducted a study in which a study was conducted involving several thousand animals. It was studied how the relief of the ears and tail of a dog affects her well-being. As a result, it was found out that in 90% of cases with age, dogs showed a deterioration in health caused by problems with the musculoskeletal system. After all, the tail is a direct continuation of the spine and its clipping cannot but affect the health of the dog. There are problems with coordination of movement, as well as stopping the tail in dogs increases the load on the hind legs, which leads to uneven development and deformation in the future. Moreover, it was possible to establish a direct relationship between aggressiveness and stopping the tail in dogs. Puppies with a trimmed tail grew more angry and less contact, they often observed mental and behavioral disorders.

It is believed that stopping the ears helps protect the dog from injuries during the hunt, and also prevents otitis media. Recent studies have shown that such an opinion is an old and persistent fallacy, and if the dog does not participate in hunting or in the service, then such a procedure generally loses all meaning. Scientists have found that an animal with cropped ears may lag behind in development, since the auricles are an important communicative means by which it expresses its emotions. But stopping the ears of dogs is mandatory for severe injuries and serious oncological diseases.

Cutting off the ears and tail of dogs is more a tribute to tradition and standards of appearance than a necessity. Moreover, the breed standards are changing rapidly and recently you can more often see a Caucasian shepherd with ears or a funny poodle with a long tail. To cut off or not - each owner or breeder decides on his own, but you need to remember that your dog will not lose its attractiveness, if you leave everything as it was laid down by nature. Good luck to you and your pet!
